Health and Safety Policy — Pressure Washing Southgate Services
This document sets out the formal health and safety policy for Pressure Washing Southgate and related exterior cleaning and power washing activities undertaken within our service area. The policy applies to all staff, contractors and third parties engaged in pressure wash operations, including site preparation, high-pressure cleaning, chemical use, waste handling and rubbish company coordination. It is the responsibility of management to ensure that safety standards are understood, implemented and maintained and of employees to comply with all safe systems of work.Policy Intent and Scope
The aim of this policy is to prevent injury, illness and environmental harm while delivering high-quality surface cleaning and pressure wash services. It sets out the organisational approach to risk assessment, control measures, training, monitoring and continuous improvement. The policy covers powered jetting, soft washing, detergent application, use of ladders and lifts, and management of runoff and contaminated materials in coordination with local rubbish collection protocols. All activities will be carried out in accordance with applicable statutory requirements and best practice.
Responsibilities and Accountabilities
Management will: ensure adequate resources, appoint competent supervisors, maintain equipment and review risk assessments. Supervisors will: implement safe systems, supervise operations and ensure PPE compliance. Operatives must: follow instructions, wear required PPE and report hazards. Key responsibilities are summarised below:- Conduct and record pre-work site inspections.
- Use only authorised detergents and chemicals with appropriate COSHH documentation.
- Ensure exclusion zones and signage for members of the public and vehicle access.
Risk Assessment and Control Measures
All jobs will be preceded by a documented risk assessment that identifies hazards such as slips, falls, waterborne contaminants, high-pressure injury, noise, electrical hazards and manual handling. Hierarchy of controls will be applied: elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls and personal protective equipment. Engineering controls may include pressure regulators, lance guards and isolation of power sources. Administrative controls include method statements, safe systems of work and communication with nearby businesses and rubbish collection services to manage debris and waste streams.
PPE, Training and Competency
All operatives must be trained and assessed as competent for high-pressure cleaning tasks. Mandatory PPE includes but is not limited to:
- Waterproof safety boots and non-slip soles
- Full-face or splash-resistant eye protection
- Cut-resistant gloves and appropriate thermal layers
- High-visibility clothing and hearing protection where needed
Equipment, Maintenance and Safe Systems of Work
All pressure washers, pumps, hoses and accessories shall be inspected, maintained and tested per manufacturer guidance. Faulty equipment must be removed from service and repaired by competent technicians. Safe systems of work include isolating live electrical sources, confirming water supplies and drainage, setting up exclusion zones and securing fall prevention measures when working on elevated surfaces. Where mechanical access equipment is required, operators must be trained and equipment must have valid inspection records.
Waste Management and Rubbish Company Liaison
Waste management is an integral part of the safety policy. Runoff, solids and contaminated materials generated by cleaning operations will be contained and disposed of appropriately. We will coordinate with local rubbish company service areas to ensure that collected waste is handled in compliance with environmental regulations. Waste segregation, containment of hazardous residues and proper documentation of disposal are mandatory. Spill kits and absorbent materials must be available on-site to contain and clean accidental releases immediately.
Incident Reporting, Monitoring and Review
All incidents, near-misses and environmental releases must be reported promptly and recorded. An investigation will be conducted to identify root causes and implement corrective actions. Key performance indicators include incident rates, training completion, equipment inspection records and audit outcomes. The policy will be reviewed at least annually or following a significant incident or change in legislation. Management commits to continuous improvement of health, safety and environmental performance.
Legal Compliance and Employee Consultation
This policy aligns with relevant health and safety legislation and statutory requirements. Employees and contractors will be consulted on matters affecting their health and safety. Safety notices, toolbox talks and documented briefings are used to ensure awareness. Non-compliance with this policy may result in disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal, depending on the severity of the breach.
Implementation and Record-Keeping
Records of risk assessments, training, equipment maintenance, incident reports and waste disposal will be maintained and made available for inspection. Supervisors are responsible for daily pre-start checks and for ensuring that method statements are current. This policy is effective from the date of issue and remains in force until superseded by a later version. By adhering to these provisions, we commit to protecting the health and safety of our workforce, customers, the public and the environment while delivering professional pressure cleaning and related services.
